Response from Cristopher Rutledge of MACUA

Dear Comrade Andreas Tadysiak. On behalf of MACUA and the mining-affected communities of Stilfontein, we extend our heartfelt appreciation for your unwavering solidarity and support. Your words resonate deeply with our struggles, and we stand firmly with our fellow miners worldwide in the fight for justice, dignity, and the recognition of our fundamental rights.
The miners of Stilfontein, like countless others across the globe, are forced to endure exploitative and hazardous conditions to sustain their families. We reject the artificial divisions imposed upon us by corporations and governments, which seek to separate us as migrant or local, industrial or artisanal miners. We are one—united in our shared struggles and aspirations for a better future.
MACUA strongly condemns the brutal actions of the South African government and its security forces in their repression of miners and mining-affected communities. The tragic loss of life and continued state-sanctioned violence against our people must not go unanswered. We join your call for justice and accountability and remain committed to pursuing legal action against those responsible.
As you rightly point out, the insatiable greed of multinational mining corporations from the USA, China, India, and the EU continues to drive the ruthless exploitation of miners, resulting in countless deaths and injuries. The criminalization of artisanal and small-scale miners only serves to deepen our oppression, stripping entire communities of their livelihoods while enriching a select few.
We recognize and salute the ongoing protests in Germany and the efforts of the International Miners' Coordination to build a global movement against exploitation and injustice. Your call for cross-border solidarity, coordination, and cooperation is one we wholeheartedly embrace. No struggle should stand alone, and only through collective action can we dismantle the oppressive structures that seek to divide and weaken us.
MACUA and the mining-affected communities of Stilfontein reaffirm our commitment to working alongside our international comrades. We call upon miners worldwide to join hands in resistance, to amplify our voices, and to demand a future where miners and their families can live with dignity, security, and equality.
Together, we are a force that cannot be ignored. Together, we will fight. And together, we will win!
In solidarity,
CHRISTOPHER RUTLEDGE | MACUA/WAMUA ADVICE OFFICE
