America: Judge extends order against striking Alabama miners, citing violence

Members of the United Mine Workers of America are marching in New York City Thursday, Nov. 4, 2021, in support of the ongoing strike against Warrior Met Coal in Alabama. Citing “unlawful, violent and prohibited” behavior by some picketers, a Tuscaloosa County circuit judge has extended a temporary restraining order against the United Mine Workers of America through Nov. 15 in their continued strike against Warrior Met Coal.

The United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) announced today that its members working at Warrior Met in Bessemer, AL did not ratify a tentative agreement that had been negotiated with the company and will remain on their unfair labor practice strike. “Our members made it clear that the tentative agreement was not sufficient enough to make up for the sacrifices made in 2016,” said International President Cecil E. Roberts.

According to the United Mine Workers of America, the strike began at 10 p.m. The UMWA issued a strike notice Wednesday, covering more than 1,100 workers at all of the company’s operations, including the No. 4 mine, the No. 5 preparation plant, the No. 7 mine and its central shop. Sintracarbón continues to fight for decent jobs and working conditions at Cerrejón, Colombia, while the company is putting pressure on 450 workers to accept voluntary retirement. If they don’t, the workers will be dismissed without just cause. According to IndustriALL Colombian affiliate Sintracarbón, on 23 February, Cerrejón threatened 450 workers with dismissal if they didn’t accept retirement.

Chile: talks with union after 30 days strike

Santiago – Chile's Escondida copper mine, the largest in the world, has invited its union to resume talks as a first step towards ending a month-long strike, it said Friday.

The strike, which began February 9 and has lasted for 30 days, is the longest in Escondida's history. With stoppages also in place at other important copper mines worldwide, global copper prices have risen on tighter supply expectations.

"The company is insistent in its call to the union to restart talks, in order to arrive at a deal that will allow the strike to end as soon as possible," Escondida said in a statement late Friday.
