To the Federal Government of the Federal Republic of Germany

The International Coal Miners Coordination Group (ICG) hereby protests against the current criminalisation of the environmental movement and the unspeakable campaign of lies in the media. The occasion for this attack, which is directed against all protest and resistance, was the death of a female cyclist in a traffic accident.

Climate activists from the group "Last Generation" had blocked a road to demonstrate against the climate policy of the federal government. Because of this, a special fire brigade vehicle would have been stuck in the traffic jam and would therefore have been delayed in arriving at the scene of the accident. The mass media spread: "It's dramatic news: A cyclist suffered brain death after climate chaos blocked the road, delaying the arrival of emergency services." The attending emergency doctor testified that the traffic jam caused by activists in Berlin had no effect on the rescue of the injured cyclist. She had already decided not to use the special vehicle because it would have put the cyclist in additional danger. But it is now the occasion for an unbelievable smear campaign against all environmental activists. The ultra-right paper "Bild": "The 'Last Generation' is already on the RAF finish line".¹ The day before, the police union had already demanded that a ban on the "Last Generation" be considered. And Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) had cleared the way for "Bild" & Co: "The constitutional state does not allow itself to be danced around on its nose. The police have my fullest support when they crack down on self-proclaimed climate activists." We, the ICG, firmly reject this smear campaign against environmental activists! Even though the "Last Generation" give more of an impression of desperate environmental fighters, they are courageously standing up for environmental protection. It is an expression of the forceful fascisation of the German state apparatus when environmental activists are taken into police custody for 4 weeks - shortly before 12 November, the environmental day of struggle. Criminal proceedings are pending against many other environmental activists. The aim is to discredit and criminalise the environmental movement, especially those who are critical of capitalism and who want to change society. We demand the immediate release of all environmental campaigners! The monopoly representatives in the corporate headquarters responsible for the destruction of the environment and the politicians who are in bondage to them must be locked up! But humanity does not want to perish in a global environmental catastrophe. Therefore, we should take a clear stance against the agitation against environmentalists and all other courageous environmental fighters: No criminalisation of the environmental struggle!
