Canada: Miners strike at nickel mine

630 miners at the Raglan Nickel and Copper Mine in Nunavik began a strike at the weekend. The mine is located on the Ungava Peninsula in the Arctic region of the Canadian province of Quebec. The miners of the USW union are fighting for better working conditions and higher wages.

Canada: Glencore workers strike

In Canada, 630 members of the Syndicat des Métallos/United Steelworkers union are on strike at the Raglan mine. The mine is owned by one of the largest international mining groups, the Swiss company Glencore. Union members are demanding real respect from Glencore. At the nickel mining operation in Nunavik, miners often work 21 consecutive days in eleven-hour shifts.

Pakistan: deadly coal mines

More workers have lost their lives in Pakistan's deadly coal mines. In May alone, 18 miners have died on the job. On 19 May, a miner at the Ghazi mine fell through a roof and died on the job(Ed. note: The roof the hanging and the miner died on the job). Just two days later, on 21 May, a worker was electrocuted in the Duki coal field and a landslide killed another miner in the same field.

Miners at the Ishtamberdi gold mine in Kyrgyzstan have been on strike for more than three weeks. Their demand is 50 per cent more pay. Previously, they had rejected the offer of a 10 per cent increase. The operator is the Chinese company Full Gold Mining, which in turn is a subsidiary of the state-owned company Lingbao Gold.

Zimbabwe: Seven workers die in a gold mine

7 miners were about to go into their well-deserved retirement when the cork bucket used to lift them to the surface fell down a 240-meter shaft after the wire rope broke. The accident occurred on May 14 at Bucks Mine near Gwanda, and the bodies of the deceased workers were recovered following salvage operations by the Ministry of Mines and Mine Development and other mine rescue teams.
