I am a member of the German miners' union IG BCE (Industriegewerkschaft Bergbau, Chemie, Energie) and was a shop steward for many years.
The International Coordination of Mine Workers strongly protests against any restrictions on the right of the union and its members to strike. We also protest against the repression of the strikers - be it by the court, police violence or the mine contractor. The district court's decision stands against the miners' democratic rights and protects those who deny the workers their rightful claims.
The International Coordination of Mineworkers hereby protests against the massive repression of the peaceful protest of the miners of Kozani through violence, beatings and chemicals. We learned about the horrific accident in your mine in Kemerovo through the media. But we also feel anger and indignation that such an accident is happening in this day and age. There have long been methods and modern techniques at the highest level to protect the safety of miners and also the people living around a mine from such damage.
Thousands of miners protested in front of a government building in Sarajevo over plans for job and wage cuts. The demonstration follows government plans to restructure indebted coal mines as part of a programme to switch to renewable energy sources. The plans involve job and wage cuts. Employees from seven of the 11 coal mines in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina stopped working and took part in the demonstration on Tuesday ( Reuters November 23).
